Foreword

This 50th Anniversary Volume is dedicated to the members of Euclid Lodge; those valiant forebearers who have laid aside the working tools of life, those who are still active and those who are to serve in the future.

It is intended to pay tribute to the courage, faith and vision of the Brethren who founded this Lodge; to express sincere gratitude and respect to those who have, through the years, faithfully and honorably carried the Torch of Masonry; and to indicate a profound realization of faith and confidence in the Masons of today and tomorrow who will, through the inspiration drawn from the splendid record which this Lodge has achieved in the past, devoutly dedicate themselves to the duties, responsibilities and glories of the Masonic Fraternity thus insuring a greater and more glorious future for Euclid Lodge 599.

This Year (1958) Euclid Lodge No. 599 pauses in its activities and, from our present position, looks backward; for this year we reach an important milestone- The Fiftieth Year of the existence of our Lodge. In retrospect, we see a small, social group of twenty-five men, who on June 20,1907, met in the banquet hall of the new Woodward Masonic Temple and discussed the matter of forming a new Lodge in the Euclid-East 105th area (then Doan's Corners) on the East side of Cleveland. It was decided that the new Lodge should have its home in the Woodward Masonic Temple and the name, selected because of its Masonic implication and perhaps because of the close proximity of the world famous "most beautiful avenue in the world", was to be "EUCLID." On that foundation they initiated the beginning of an organization that was to exemplify and typify all the principles for patriotism, brotherly love, relief, fortitude, tolerance, understanding and civil and religious liberty; a lodge which was to become known throughout Ohio and Canada for its fraternal association and loyal and devoted support and cooperation in all local, state and national Masonic projects.

On October 10, 1907, Most Worshipful Brother Horace A. Irvin, Grand Master of Masons in Ohio, received the petition for the forming of a new lodge in Cleveland to be named Euclid. It is of interest to note that another founding group from the Cleveland area had selected the name "Euclid" for a new lodge, but "on account of defective papers" the dispensation was refused at the Grand Lodge session of 1865. At the Grand Lodge Communication in Canton, Ohio on October 22,1907, a dispensation was granted for Euclid Lodge U.D. The newly elected and installed Grand Master was Most Worshipful Brother George D. Copeland, a Past Master of Marion Lodge No. 70 of Marion, Ohio. It is significant to note that the fraternal ties of brotherly love and affection have bound Marion and Euclid in close association ever since. On November 26,1907, the first special meeting of Euclid Lodge U.D. was held in the Woodward Masonic Temple. Most Worshipful Brother Copeland journeyed from Marion and conferred the first Entered Apprentice Degree on the candidate, Lewis W. Lafferty. Amid the ceremonies of the Grand Lodge Centennial celebration in the Music Hall in the City of Cincinnati, Euclid Lodge U.D. received its charter on October 21,1908, and became Euclid Lodge 599; the first lodge to be chartered in the Cleveland area in some thirty-three years. Most Worshipful Brother Charles S. Hoskinson, Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Ohio, regularly constituted and consecrated Euclid Lodge on October 30,1908,and served as installing officer, assisted by Most Worshipful Brother Copeland acting as Deputy Grand Master, in the public installation of its officers. On September 8, 1921, Euclid Lodge moved to its second home; meeting in the new Masonic Temple at Euclid 3615 Avenue. It was during this period, 1922, that Euclid sponsored a new lodge, which fittingly and properly was named "Pythagoras." Euclid returned to the place of its founding, Woodward Masonic Temple, on December 6, 1934, and has remained and held its meetings there to the present time.

Euclid Lodge was sponsored by Halcyon Lodge No. 498 of Cleveland, and the petition for dispensation carried the signature of 159 Master Masons, representing lodges in fourteen states and three foreign countries. Eleven of the signers of the original petition are still members in good standing, and the directory also contains the names of nine members who were raised while the Lodge was under dispensation. Eight of the original signers of the petition and two of those admitted while under dispensation have served the Lodge as Worshipful Masters. The Lodge has had a steady, sustained growth, and the last report to the Grand Lodge indicated a membership of 1,054.

Looking back, while we feel greatly indebted to those good Masons who gave faithful and untiring service, wise counsel and unabating energy and enthusiasm in surmounting the obstacles and difficulties in the pioneering and formation of our Lodge and have made it what it is today, it has been duly assumed and rightly so, that the ability of no individual or group of member has determined the success attained, but rather this may be attributed to the devoted service and cooperation of every member.

Looking ahead, in this Fiftieth Year, on March 27,1958, the members of Euclid Lodge elected to move to a third home by entering into a joint endeavor in the construction and occupancy of a new Shaker Masonic Temple in Shaker Heights, Ohio. This new venture in our history will be met with the same undaunted spirit of achievement and cooperation which characterized our valiant forebearers and bred the strong ties and traditions which bind its members together and to their Lodge; that certain indefinable intangible which can be neither counted, weighed nor measured, but a thing of spirit which the future generations will perpetuate through the years to come, insuring a greater and more glorious future for Euclid Lodge No.599.
